Solar and Green Technology
Al’s Quality Electric Inc. worked on these installs as a sub-contractor with and for Puget Sound Solar.
Yes, Solar Makes Sense for Washington. A solar system is an investment and should be earning you money 30 years from now!
- Our state gets about 70% as much sun on an annual basis as San Diego.
- Purchasers of new residential solar systems are eligible for a 30% tax credit.
- Business tax payers get a 30% investment tax credit.
- For each 1,000 watts of PV you can get up to 1,200 kWh of household electricity per year.
- PV systems cost between $7.50 to $11.00 per watt installed.
- A 1,000 watt PV system typically costs around $10,000 installed.
- A 3,000 watt system costs about $23,000 installed.
- Production Incentives – The funding comes from the state utility tax Washington legislature passed a bill in 2005 authorizing utilities to pay $.15/kWh for energy produced by solar or wind systems. This arrangement will be in place till July 2014.
- If you buy an inverter manufactured in Washington state the $.15 is boosted to $.18/kWh. If you buy panels made in WA you earn $.36/kWh and with both made in WA you earn $.54/kWh.
- There is currently no sales tax on grid-connected photovoltaic systems.
Hot Water Systems
- Solar hot water systems can collect up to 70 percent of the solar energy that reaches them and deliver it to you.
- They can be used for domestic hot water, for hot water space heating (such as radiant systems) or for both.
- A typical household with reasonably good solar access can generate 50 to 75 percent of its hot water from the sun.
- A solar domestic hot water system usually costs between $6,200 to $8,400 installed, depending on the size.
- The Internal Revenue Service will give you a tax credit equal to 30% of the installed system cost.
- There is currently no sales tax on solar water heating systems or installation (some restrictions apply).
Green Tags:
Your system can earn an additional 5 cents per kWh by selling Green Tags. For specifics about this program go to www.cascadesolar.com
For information from the national American Solar Energy Society visit www.ases.org and for information in our state www.solarwashington.org.
To apply for the incentive, system owners fill out a simple form and send it to the Northwest Solar Center for evaluation and the next steps of the process.
